Will NFC tag on metal?
It depends.
Scenario 1 - directly tagging the normal nfc tags on metal surface
the answer is no. no matter aluminum or steel or other types of material, it doesn't work. Root reason
1. RFID wave reflection on metal surface, if reflect wave phase is just 180 degree, then it will completely naturalized with the incoming wave, therefore make the tag unreadable.
2. Also metal surface also will destroy the impedance coupling between the tag and reader, which will lower the power transmit efficiency, which finally lead to tag unable to draw sufficient power from reader to activate itself.
Both above reasons make the nfc tags unreadable on metal surface.
Scenario 2- tagging the nfc tags with ferrite layer or isolated with non-metallic material
this does work. Either physical isolation and apply ferrite layer could greatly improved the tag's performance.
Ferrite layer, which can either absorbed the reflection RFID signal from metal surface, and physical isolation also will greatly improve the impedance matching, therefore could activate the tags.
